“Better Weather” by The Housing Crisis

By Leif Holmström

The Housing Crisis’s latest single gives listeners a “clear” preview of their upcoming album.

“Better Weather” by The Housing Crisis

“The sun is shining, but we’re still waiting for better weather” rings true for many a Gainesville resident, but it’s also a bit of bittersweet lyricism from Dylan O’Bryan’s most recent release, appropriately titled “Better Weather.” The single sounds like a cosmic pop anti-ballad, with acoustic guitars and soaring synths creating a soundscape reminiscent of space travel. But not all is right in the rocket ship; the “world is spinning” and we’re just “trying to keep on standing,” but all we can do is wait for some distant better weather.

The story of the song sounds like a relationship marred with uncertainty and a desire for something- anything- that could change how it currently is. That is, anything that could prevent the fall from the skies inherent to this feeling. It reminds one of the iconic opener “I Want Wind to Blow” by The Microphones from The Glow, Pt. 2, a premonition of upcoming strife and sadness still encompassed by a passive contentment. There is a desire for an imprecise change that could magically solve everything- yet “we both know we are young,” inexperienced, and stuck waiting.

The song was originally written over two years ago, in September 2020, making it the oldest song of The Housing Crisis’s upcoming album: Astral Apartments. Partnering with local Gainesville labels 4Bits Records and Swamp Records, this will be The Housing Crisis’s first album and newest release after nearly a year. “Better Weather” will be the opener of the album, reeling listeners into a new “cosmic folk” sound and feel. If the album is anything like the single, there is much to look forward to for The Housing Crisis’ upcoming work.

The single is available on all major streaming platforms. You can stream it here.
